PETER LET HER ESCAPE. He wanted to chase her, to take her in his arms and kiss her fears away. Their jumbled-up pasts were a bigger issue for her than for him. Maybe it was a male-female thing. It was why she had been avoiding his calls and text messages. Her willingness to open-up to him, even just a little was refreshing. He’d let her have her remaining secrets; only because she was uncertain of him.

He raked his fingers through his hair trying to combat a discomfort that was both mental and physical. The physical discomfort, while distracting, he could deal with. Heaven knows it had been years since he had been with a woman and including his soon-to-be ex-wife. The pain in Beth’s eyes, the sadness and confusion he had seen there ripped at his heart. The pain she had endured when Dan died was part of it, but it certainly wasn’t all that she was feeling.

He ambled out of the bedroom and followed Beth. He smiled at his own naivety. When he had sought comfort with Beth after Amanda had returned, he had been optimistic he and Beth could finally find a way to be together; especially since the barriers keeping them apart had dissolved. His attraction to Beth hadn’t lessened over the years, in fact as he grew to know her better, he had fallen deeper and deeper in love with her. He would have sworn she felt the same and he had expected her to ... okay, he had expected her to fall into his arms and it hurt that she hadn’t.

Her reluctance wasn’t going to stop him. He was going to break through the shadows and free the woman she used to be. He was going to bring back the smile that lit up his world.

“Watch yourself, woman,” he whispered as he followed her down the stairs. “I’m coming for you.”
